Beneath the Surface

A seed does not become a tree in a day.

For a time, nothing appears to happen.

Above the surface there is silence.
But beneath it, something has already begun.

The seed changes.
Its protective shell softens.
Something within begins to move.

Eventually, a single thread emerges.

The first root.

There is no leaf.
No stem.
Nothing yet reaching toward the light.

And from above, there may still be no visible evidence that anything has changed at all.

But it has.
Growth has begun.

Twenty-four hours after Project ROOT was planted, there are already observations worth recording.

People found it.
Some passed by.
Some stayed.
Some asked questions.
Some wanted to know who was behind it.

And some, without being asked, wondered how they might help it grow.

That was not designed.
It was observed.

A small discussion space has also formed.
Perhaps that matters.

Roots do not grow alone. They branch. They encounter other roots. They exchange information with the environment around them and, over time, networks form beneath a surface that may still appear completely unchanged.

Project ROOT will not direct that process.

The seed has been planted.
What the roots do from here is part of the experiment.

Perhaps the most important changes happen before anyone can see them.
